Colors can definitely be intimidating, especially for a beginner. Hue, value, intensity – what are these things? How do they work?
To take the stress off a bit, here’s a quick demo of a simple snowscape done with only three colors:
- Raw Sienna
- Ultramarine Blue
- Raw Umber
Seriously, that’s it. The Raw Sienna is the gold in the sky. The clouds are U. Blue and Raw Umber, as are the trees and the fence posts. The snow is just blue. Here’s the step by step process:
- Pencil line drawing.
- Wet entire paper with clean water, until it is thoroughly soaked.
- While the paper is still wet, brush in raw sienna and gray mixed from the blue and brown to create clouds.
- Once dry, paint snow wet-into-wet.
- Paint trees with dark mixture of blue and brown.
- Paint fence.
